A Cure for Darfur

A HUGE Success

During the school day, we finished pricing and packing the Metro truck. The truck left for the field around two o'clock, where some of the parents started setting up. By 3:30, most all of the kids had arrived to help out. Most of the customers came during the time that we were holding up our signs and calling at the top of our voices.

At about 6:30, we took a break to eat hot dogs and chips, and then resumed our positions. We started wrapping up the things that were left at about 7:00. The remaining items were loaded back into the truck and driven to the nearest Salvation Army drop-off location. A small group of people swiftly unloaded the truck before going home around 8:00.

We were greatly rewarded for all of our efforts over the past months with $1052. That's over twice our goal of $500! I'd really like to thank Mrs. McIntosh for helping with this huge project. None of this could have been possible without her!

I have just returned home from a very successful yard sale. We raised a total of $1052! More details and pictures coming soon!

One More Day!

Yesterday, we had our last meeting before the yard sale Friday. Student, parents, and teachers all worked together to price and bag the items to sell. Once they were priced, items were taken to a moving truck that was generously donated by a parent.

Today during class, a group of students priced a set of items that were brought in during the morning. Please remember that we are accepting items to sell until tomorrow at 4 PM. I will post the last day for money donations in a future post.

The entries for the jelly bean jar will be calculated on Monday. Please don't stop guessing until then!

We greatly appreciate all donations that have been given to this worthy cause. Special thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers that have helped every step of the way.

The jelly bean jar is officially underway! Each guess is $0.25, and you may guess as many times as you'd like. The jar is in Mrs. McIntosh's room.

At our last meeting, it was decided that there would be a yard sale at Magnolia Park (next to the first Baptist Church) in Trussville, Alabama. It will be held on May 1st from 4:00 PM- 7:00 PM. We are accepting donations to sell at the yard sale. The boxes are also in Mrs. McIntosh's room.

I'm sorry that I don't have the minutes from the last meeting up yet. I will post them ASAP.

Until the yard sale, we will hold meetings after school every Wednesday. Hope to see you there!

Yard Sale

At our latest Darfur meeting, the K9 students decided to hold a yard sale to raise money. Each student, along with their parents, can provide new or slightly used items to sell. The Mall in Trussville is a possible location for the fundraiser, depending on approval from administration.

We will be asking for donations from local businesses to support our cause. A list of the needed donations will be made at our next meeting. It will be posted as soon as possible.

One-hundred percent of the money raised will be sent directly to a relief organization. If you are interested in making a donation, please leave a contact in the comment section.

We have raised over $170 so far. Thank you for all of your support!

Dear K-9 team – boy am I impressed! I think this is such a good experience for you – being compassionate for others and doing something about it is a step to being an excellent citizen for our country. You will appreciate that my students are sending two goats to a foreign country. One will feed a family of four milk and with their surplus they can sell/make cheese, yogurt, etc. And they can expect to have baby goats to sell or use for surplus sales. :-) This is the first year we’ve been able to purchase two so we’re excited about that…..we may also have enough to get a flock of chickens.

Our project has officially been started! This morning was our first Darfur meeting. There were some excellent ideas expressed and put into action within 30 minutes. Imagine what a group of hard-working 7th grades can do in a month! As of today, the K-9 team has raised $17.00 to send to Darfur. We have many ideas to put into action.

For the rest of the week, the school's news will announce that we have a donation box in Mrs. McIntosh's classroom. We are hoping to place more boxes around HTMS very soon to collect more donations.

As of Monday, we will have a jar full of jellybeans at the school. You can pay 25 cents to submit a guess as to of how many jellybeans are in the jar. The student with the closes guess will win the jar. The objective is to give an incentive to learn about the issues in Darfur and to stop them.

Our campaign managers are in search of a guest speaker. They are looking for somebody who is passionate about spreading the word for this great cause. If you are available to help, please leave you're name and a way to contact you in the comment's section. We will be sure to get back with you soon.

Thank you to everyone who has helped to spread awareness about the issues in Darfur. Remember: spreading awareness does not mean creating a fundraiser. Welcome to our blog! This has been put together for the K-9 team at HTMS to spread awarness of what's going on in Darfur. We plan to earn enough money to send to Darfur to contribute towards clean water, food, sanitation, education, and shelters. Our website is k9scontribute2crisis.weebly.com.
